Mow (like Cow) Cop.
An early start this morning as the walk was going to be strenuous, but the good news was that it was quite cool and overcast. We were aiming for Mow Cop Castle – which is actually a folly on top of a hill. They used to mine mill stones around there.
We left the canal and walked up the road a bit (after another public footpath) and crossed the train line, which is the official start of the Killer Mile. A 1 mile climb with an averaged 1:4 gradient with no down hill.
A lot of bike riders were tackling the hill – I only saw two make it without getting off and walking. They have quite a famous foot race up the hill in May. It was nice an cool when we got to the top we spent a sometime looking around and then went back to the boat. Going down was much harder on my knees than going up.
Walking down the hill I found a bumble bees nest. I didn’t know they nested in the ground. It must have been quite large – as I was standing trying to get a photo of the bees, I could smell the honey.
